History of Parnassos

Parnassos Celebrates its 40th Anniversary / Honours its Founding Members

On February 8, 2014, the Parnassos Hellenic Cultural Society of Ottawa celebrated its 40th Anniversary at the Hellenic Meeting and Reception Centre, 1315 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa. About 130 persons attended the celebration, including His Excellency the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Eleftherios Anghelopoulos, the President of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa, Mr. Jim Reklitis, and Mrs. Reklitis, and Fr. Alex and Presbytera Maria Michalopoulos.
A key highlight of the celebration was the recognition of those men and women who had the vision to establish Parnassos some forty years ago. Dimitris Athanasiadis, Athanasios Fotiou, Zisis Haritos, Maria Kanellakos, Soula Liakopoulou, Ianthi Lykourgou, Nikos Papadolias, George Pitsicoulis, and Basil Zafiriou were recognized as the Founding Members of Parnassos. During the 1974/75 period, these individuals laid the early foundations of what we now know as Parnassos Hellenic Cultural Society of Ottawa, Inc.

The wording of Parnassos mission changed through the years; however, one message about its mission was always clear: To promote the Hellenic culture and civilization. And Parnassos has been doing so most successfully for some forty years now by hosting events and lectures on history, archaeology, literature, philosophy, etc. emphasizing the Hellenic contributions to Western culture and civilization.

Revised By-Laws (May 2014)

Dear Members and Friends of Parnassos,

I attach below the revised by-laws of our organization. The attached version is based on the recommendations of a committee comprised of Ms. Margaret Zafiriou, Mr. Basil Zafiriou and
Dr. George Trigylidas. The version below has been further edited and approved by the current Executive at its May 10 meeting. The revised by-laws will be presented to our Membership for final approval at our Annual General Meeting this fall.

In brief, the revised version of by-laws

  • Complies with recent Provincial and Federal Government guidelines for not-for-profit organizations
  • Is in line with recent practice, and eliminates misunderstandings as a result of previous versions and interpretations of the by-laws regarding membership qualification and other issues
  • Provides for a leaner Executive structure and more defined roles and responsibilities
  • Introduces Honorary Membership, as a way of recognising significant contributions to the mission and objectives of Parnassos

The Parnassos Executive and I look forward to receiving your comments on the revised by-laws prior to presenting them to our Membership for final approval.

Andreas C. Vikis
